Last week the news was that Ubuntu is finally getting serious about our ARM port.  This is great news, of course - Ubuntu could become the platform for everything from phones to handhelds to the Pandora game console.  This puts us in direct competition with Windows Mobile.

I believe Ubuntu should take Language Leadership seriously and choose to embrace those languages which are lead by those who firmly believe in Free Software.Including a language on our default desktop cd is a form of embracing the language and all that it stands for. Microsoft is clearly playing the leadership role when it comes to the creation of .NET and Novell is for all intensive purposes following their lead with Mono.

For years now, I've been in the habit of advising all users to disable desktop effects before they use Wine.  Most users, myself included, end up leaving it off entirely, resulting in an inevitable loss of polish.I heard a while back that this doesn't have to be the case, and that there was work being done within Compiz to make sure it played nicely with other OpenGL applications, most notably Wine.  Is that work done?  Or should Intrepid users still disable desktop effects before launching any Wine application with Direct3D or OpenGL graphics?

With the intepid development cycle the mobile team has split its efforts into producing two different images, one is the well known Ubuntu MID image targeting 4-7″ MID devices with 800×480 desktops using mobiln technology. This image is getting a lot of improvements over the hardy release during the intrepid cycle … You can find the current daily build for it here.

December 4, 2008 (Computerworld) IBM and Canonical Inc. today announced a virtualized software bundle with Lotus desktop applications running on top of Ubuntu Linux that they say is far cheaper than running Microsoft Corp.’s Office suite on conventional Windows PCs.
