Mackenzie Morgan: Keep One Application Together
http://ubuntulinuxtipstricks.blogspot.com –
One feature of VirtueDesktops that I really liked on OS X was being able to constrain an application to a specific workspace. It turns out Compiz has been able to do this for, well, since Beryl and Compiz became Compiz Fusion. For organization, I like to keep my Pidgin windows all in one place. I'm likely to miss them if they popup behind my Firefox, after all. Usually this means I notice Read more »

Raphael Pinson: To go for main or not to go for main… that is the question!

Almost a month from Dapper release, we upload quite a lot of packages to main, especially to fix bugs, and it’s important that the fixes are uploaded fast enough so we can move on to other bugs and release Dapper as stable as can be. Read more »

Alberto Milone: A few updates on EnvyNG, NVIDIA and URandR
http://albertomilone.com –
EnvyNG:
I have updated envyng-core (2.0) and envyng-qt (2.0) in Intrepid. The GTK interface doesn’t work and even if I managed to solve the problems with GTK and threading I couldn’t upload it since we’re in feature freeze.
The new textual interface and the QT4 interface now rely on python-apt and python-xkit. Thanks to the work I did on the drivers I won’t have to keep the compatibility list updated since it will rely on the same system which we are using for Jockey. Read more »
Mackenzie Morgan: Microsoft, Enough With the Obvious Patents!
http://ubuntulinuxtipstricks.blogspot.com –
A bit over a year ago, I blogged about Microsoft patenting sudo. They're at it again. Guess what they patented this time. According to ZDNet, Microsoft patented the Page Up and Page Down keys. Yeah, no kidding. I really like how they linked to a keyboard from 1981 where you can see the aforementioned keys on the numpad. Read more »

Raphael Pinson: Back on Planet Ubuntu
http://raphink.info –
I just updated the feed URL to my new blog on Planet Ubuntu, so my posts are now shown again on it.I just noticed something though... The very old posts I restored on my blog are appearing as new posts, even though I set their date to their original posting date (back in 2004, 2005 and so on), so there's some posts about testing Warty that appear on Planet. It will pass soon as other people post. I don't really know how to fix this right now. Sorry guys. Read more »

Kees Cook: kvm disk image filesystem growth notes
http://www.outflux.net –
Here are my notes on growing a KVM disk image’s root filesystem. I had a few 4G partitions that really needed to be bigger. This shows how to get a report on the sizes of the disk images, convert them to raw, work on the partition tables, grow the root filesystem, and rebuild the swap partition with the original UUID. With some work, it could probably become fully scripted, but since the partition layout may not always be the same from VM to VM, the “fdisk” step needs human interaction to delete and rebuild the partition table. SCO's Motion to Give Stock Options to 4 Executives
http://www.groklaw.net –
SCO has filed a motion [PDF], titled Debtor's Motion for (1) a Determination that Stock Options Granted to Executives Were Awarded in the Ordinary Court of Debtors' Business and (2) Continuing Authority to Grant Ordinary Course Stock Options. SCO says it consulted with the US Trustee's Office and it says it takes no position on this motion. But SCO says they are filing the motion "in an abundance of caution." And it has filed a motion [PDF] to be able to file evidence and give testimony about the stock plan under seal. Well. I would want that too, I'm thinking, all things considered. Read more »
Dustin Kirkland: A working “service” script in Ubuntu Intrepid
http://dustinkirkland.wordpress.com –
I managed hundreds of Red Hat, Fedora, and CentOS servers between 1998 and 2006. That’s over 8 years of using the service command to start, stop, restart, and obtain the status of the many services located in /etc/init.d.
After my migration to Ubuntu, I would often find myself trying to use the service command at an Ubuntu command prompt.
With some digging, I might have found two different implementations in Ubuntu, trying to provide the service command’s functionality, in the packages: Read more »

Mackenzie Morgan: Who's using Gwibber?
http://ubuntulinuxtipstricks.blogspot.com –
I know a bunch of Ubuntu folks switched to Identi.ca, what with it being like an open-source Twitter. And a bunch of us are using Gwibber to send and receive updates. There's talk going on of some micro-blogging (with Identi.ca/Laconica's tags, that is) for Ubuntu and possibly UDS and such. But right now I'm wondering who's using Gwibber? I know I am. Jorge Castro is. Myrtti is. Who else? Read more »
