Matthew Helmke: On Being Thankful

http://matthewhelmke.net No one is an island. None of us is able to survive, much less live, completely self-sufficient. Each of us need others. I am thankful for the many who have helped me during my life; family, friends, coworkers and colleagues, teachers, doctors, shopkeepers, assistants, the list would be very long indeed if I continued. It is important to take a moment on occasion and remember those who have been influential, helpful, or just plain loving, and say, “Thank you.” Read more »

Herman Bos: Report Ubuntu releaseparty Groningen

http://dev.osso.nl Looking back on the releaseparty last weekend it was quite successful in my opinion, with about ~50 humans, who all sticked around for the whole program. In my opinion this releaseparty had a perfect size. At least a size which stays fun for the organizing ubuntunese in the sense that your not only busy with logistics. This size is also great for the athmosphere, “gezellig”. The two talks were good too. First a boring talk by Jan Stedehouder and afterwards an lively and interactive talk by Kees Hink which failed horribly, both in a positive way. Read more »

Philip Newborough: A new home for CrunchBang Linux

http://crunchbang.org Over the last few days I have been busy beavering away creating a new project site for CrunchBang Linux. I had been thinking about creating a separate site for the project for a while, mainly because my personal site was never built with the intention of hosting any such project. Also, I figure that now the project has its own page on DistroWatch, I should really start taking the whole thing a little more seriously. Read more »

Jono Bacon: Money. Stability?

http://www.jonobacon.org Something struck me yesterday, while Firefox 3 was throwing a hissy fit. Is there some kind of correlation between the amount of money invested in a project or product and instability? I know this sounds like a bit of a negative question, and I don’t mean to rag on the Firefox folks, but it seems that as more money has been pouring into Mozilla Towers, the quality has been compromised. At first I thought this was just on Linux, but it seems to be on Windows too. Read more »

Stephan Hermann: Apache2 + PHP5 and Fileuploads via POST > 2GB

http://www.sourcecode.de Oh well, I think I'm using lazyweb too often now, but as I don't find a solution, and some of you are mostly smarter then I am, here the question: Setup an Apache2.2 webserver with PHP5 and configure /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini to allow fileuploads with post_max_size > 6G and upload_max_filesize > 4G Now, given that apache2 has the LimitRequestBody set to 0 this should give us the possibility to upload files via multipart/formdata and post method which are bigger then 2G. But, somehow we are running into PHP.NET Bug #44522 and the upload stops somehow. Read more »

Timo Jyrinki: Why I don't like blogger.

http://losca.blogspot.com Hmm, I think it's happening again. I changed the Planet Ubuntu to only feed on posts tagged 'ubuntu' from now on, and now as an example tagged one post as 'ubuntu', in addition to this one I'm now writing. Google told me that using "Label actions" to change labels wouldn't affect the feed, but it looks like the feed timestamp for my previous, older post was again updated (not the "Published", but "Updated")... Rafik Ouerchefani: Talking about Ubuntu, Live on Radio Sfax waves.

http://rafiiik.blogspot.com After the conference at the Faculty of Sciences, it was planned to give a phone call interview for Radio Sfax. But as I missed the train, I was able to be present at the studio. Radio Sfax is a governmental radio based in Sfax, the economic capital of Tunisia.I asked Hela Ouesleti, who organized the first Ubuntu event in Sfax two weeks ago, to come with me. I was pleased to see people welcoming us with very good manners saying : "Congratulations, you are young and so active". Read more »
